Day 0a. Frankfurt, Germany (The Zeil)

Situated on the Main River, and home to one of the world’s busiest airports, Frankfurt is one of the largest financial centers on the European continent.

5 Euros!
Our trip to the Middle East began with a 9-hour delay in the heart of Frankfurt, a few metro stops from the Zeil.

Analogous in some ways to Montreal's Old Port, the Zeil is Frankfurt's main shopping street, and is one of the most crowded in Germany.

With a tour group of 50 students, professors and spouses, we couldn't all leave the airport at the same time. So we divided into smaller groups to explore the city.

From Wikipedia:
The Zeil is a street in the city centre of Frankfurt, Germany. The name is derived from the German word Zeile 'row' and originally referred to a row of houses on the eastern end of the north side; the name was not extended to the entire street until later.

Since the end of the 19th century it has been one of the most famous and busiest shopping streets in Germany. Before World War II it was also known for its grand buildings, but most of them were destroyed and not rebuilt. The western part of the Zeil is a pedestrian zone between two large plazas, Hauptwache in the west and Konstablerwache in the east. These two plazas serve as major intersections for underground trains, trams and buses.

I have no idea what these bikes are, but they look German!

Fake levitation: What an effortless way to make money!

Now that's great architecture!

Some of the more crowded sections...

From here, our group were faced with a decision:
a) visit Frankfurt's Museum of Architecture, or
b) go check out the old church off the beaten path...

Next stop: St. Bartholomew's Cathedral

NOTE: I will be adding the places visited daily... until I finish the photo journal.
Keep watch on my Facebook wall for additional posts. - DK
